From 1850-1900, romantic rebellion fuelled English arts.  Reacting to the surge of industrialisation and its mediocre design, young artists turned to the past; for the Pre-Raphaelites the inspiration was the early Renaissance, for William Morris and the Arts and Crafts Movement it was the medieval guild system.  This desire to blend beauty and usefulness was the impetus for a new rise in creative activity.
