Investigate: Natural History
Book NowTake your class on a journey exploring the different aspects of the museum’s natural history collection and produce a case file of their findings.
Tailored specifically to SEND groups, this session offers the opportunity to learn about what ‘natural history’ means by investigating real fossil, plant and animal specimens in a multisensory way. First, the group will take a look at fossils, and use their sense of touch to feel the difference between them and minerals. They will then study plant specimens, and use their sense of smell to learn more about how plants attract animals and why. Finally, they will listen to animal sounds, and try to match them to real animal specimens whilst learning more about how these animals survive in the wild. By the end of the session, they will have compiled a case file of drawings and crafts that they can take away with them.
Key activities:
- Using touch to examine fossil and mineral specimens
- Using smell to examine plant specimens
- Using hearing to examine animal specimens
- Creating an optional case file to take back to class
