Michael Dolley Memorial Lectures
Join the Numismatic Society of Ireland (Northern Branch) for an afternoon of free talks at the Ulster Museum.
The Numismatics Society of Ireland (Northern Branch) are hosting an afternoon of free public lectures on Saturday 5th April!
Inspired by the life of Michael Dolley, these lectures are a celebration of the 100th anniversary of his birth. Born in Oxford, Michael Dolley (1925–1983) was a renowned numismatist and historian, particularly known for his work on Anglo-Saxon, Irish, and Manx coins.
Numismatic collections hold artistic, social, cultural, and political value. These collections are important as they can help trace the rapid development of civilian life in the shadow of war and more peaceful times. The Ulster Museum holds a vast numismatic collection with over 50,000 materials including coins, tokens, banknotes, medals and more.
There will be 3 main speakers at this event;
- Dr Kristin Bornholdt Collins – Making Waves – Dolley and the Vikings in Dublin, Belfast and Isle of Man
- Dr John Rainey – Personal Recollections – Standing on the Shoulders of a Giant
- Oisín Mac Conamhna – From Sihtric to Sarsfield: Somes Aspects of Irish Numismatics, in Memory of Michael Dolley
